It has been a total privilege to volunteer at JSHC. As a speech pathology student, I’ve gained so much experience as to what working in the field is like. Each of the 100+ hours I’ve volunteered at the center has been as rewarding as the next and the staff respects the volunteer position just as if I were actually an employee. Even if you have just a few hours a month, giving your time to help out at JSHC is worth every second!

In the summer of 2012, I was in the process of pursuing my master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. Part of my semester required that I obtain so many hours volunteering with an organization that assisted people with disabilities. Doing some research, I discovered Jacksonville Speech and Hearing. Although I started off volunteering as a mandatory need for a semester, I stayed on afterwards. I loved going out into the community and assisting with hearing screenings and health fairs. Even though I was only a part time volunteer, I felt I was given the opportunity to make a difference in the education of the community.

My first week was just the last rain drop before the rainbow appeared with the pot of gold at the other side. It was a lot to cover bases with the welcoming staff and learning names. At the Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center, it is more of a family-oriented environment. As weeks passed by, I realized the great opportunity I had to work on the silent auction list for the gathering of community supporters for FinFest. Each day I updated information by calling and confirming the point of contacts and addresses. Also, I was so excited to know that I actually had a key role in training the new silent auction coordinator for the upcoming event. Working here at the Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center has opened my eyes on how this world goes around. I have had a great time exploring different assignments around the office, from superbills to helping with rebilling the Veterans Affairs office.
