It’s no secret that our bodies are systemic. Every system works and effects another system. In recent years, considerable information has emerged on the link between hearing and just about every aspect of a person’s life. It has been linked to cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, increased risk of falling, increased hospitalizations, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, cancer treatments, depression, and speech and language disorders.
Early detection and treatment shows a reduction in the occurrences of many of these other health-related concerns. It’s never too early or too late to take steps to address a hearing concern.
At Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center, we are proud to offer a variety of audiology services including:
- Pediatric and adult diagnostics
- Hearing aid prescribing, fitting, and adjusting
- Tympanometry and Acoustic Reflex
- Otoacoustic Emission (OAE)
- Tinnitus Treatment
- OSHA compliant industrial screenings
- Ear molds for hunting, recreational shooting, swimming, musicians, and hearing aids

Understanding Hearing Loss
Hearing loss is a common problem that can be caused by aging, disease/trauma, long-term exposure to excessive loud noises, and genetics. Hearing involves the ear’s ability to identify sounds and the brain’s ability to understand those sounds, including the sounds of speech.
There are three types of hearing loss: conductive (involving the outer or middle ear), sensorineural (involving the inner ear), and mixed (a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss). When experiencing hearing loss, common symptoms may include:
- Difficulty hearing conversations, especially in the presence of background noise
- Asking to repeat conversations
- Misunderstanding what has been said
- Difficulty hearing telephone conversations
- Increasing the volume on the television or radio
- Feeling that people are mumbling when they are talking
- Difficulty hearing certain sounds or pitches
- Straining to hear or keep up with a conversation
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Withdrawing from interactions
- Not participating in activities such as going to the movies or group gatherings because of the extra effort needed to follow what is being said

Assessment of Hearing Loss
If you or a loved one has exhibited symptoms of hearing loss, it is important to schedule an appointment with a licensed audiologist. Your audiologist will conduct an audiological (hearing) evaluation, which will help determine the cause, degree, and type of your hearing loss. This evaluation consists of multiple tests with several different components, each providing specific diagnostic information.
Tests in your audiological evaluation may include, but are not limited to:
- Diagnostic Hearing Evaluations
- Tinnitus Assessment and Treatment
- Assessment for Hearing Aid
- Tympanometry and Reflex Threshold
- Central Auditory Function Evaluation
- Pure-tone Audiometry
- Speech Audiometry with Speech Recognition
- Acoustic Immittance Testing
- Comprehensive Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE)
The results of your evaluation will create a basis for an individualized treatment plan, which will ensure that you receive audiological care guaranteed to improve your quality-of-life.
