In most cases, once hearing loss occurs it can’t be restored. However, there are several treatment options that can help improve the quality of life for individuals with hearing loss and prevent future hearing loss.

Hearing Aids
The most common treatment for hearing loss is amplification with hearing aids. Today’s digital hearing aids are smaller and contain technology to alleviate problems faced in difficult listening situations, such as background noise. Contemporary hearing aids also are better at identifying and eliminating feedback. Anyone, who has a mild hearing loss or greater, could potentially benefit from a hearing aid.
The Jacksonville Speech & Hearing Center’s licensed clinical audiologists treat adults and children who are experiencing hearing loss and may require hearing aids.
For those with hearing loss in both ears, two hearing aids are usually recommended. With proper treatment, patients will be able to localize sounds, distinguish one sound from another, and understand speech in background noise.

Cochlear Implants
A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that partially restores hearing. Rather than amplify sound like a hearing aid, a cochlear implant bypasses damaged portions of the ear to deliver sounds directly to the auditory nerve. For patients with severe hearing loss from inner ear damage who receive limited benefits from hearing aids, a cochlear implant may provide better audiology outcomes.

If your audiologist identifies a cochlear implant as a good treatment, the next step is to begin assembling a top-notch team to support you on all stages of your cochlear journey that includes your audiologist, medical professionals from Cochlear Americas, and any loved ones who you would consider important in the decision-making process.
